What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding is best for small fixes — a chip, a small gap, or reshaping the edge of one, two or several teeth. Tooth-coloured resin is sculpted directly onto your existing tooth, then shaped, cured and polished to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. It’s quick, affordable and usually completed in a single visit.

Because it adds only to the edges and embrasures of a tooth rather than covering it, bonding is the most conservative cosmetic treatment we offer — often with little to no drilling — and an affordable alternative to veneers for minor corrections.

Edge bonding vs veneers — the key difference

Edge bonding only partially covers the front surface of a tooth — perfect for building up a worn or chipped edge. A composite veneer or porcelain veneer covers the entire front surface. So if you want a whole tooth resurfaced, or a significant colour change that whitening alone can’t achieve, a veneer is the right choice — if you just need a subtle correction, bonding is all you need.

Frequently asked questions

How long does composite bonding last?+
Composite bonding is a popular and effective cosmetic solution for teeth that have been chipped or cracked. It involves using tooth-coloured resin material to fill in the teeth, giving them a more even appearance and restoring their function. The strength and durability of this material make it a great option for long-lasting results; with proper care and routine maintenance, composite bonding can typically be expected to last up to five years before needing to be touched up or reapplied. Avoiding activities such as chewing ice or hard sweets can help extend the life of your composite bonding even further.
Is it worth getting composite bonding?+
The composite resin used during this procedure is durable enough to last many years as long as it is well-maintained with regular check-ups and good oral hygiene habits. Not only is the material tooth-coloured, but it also allows for quick corrections if there are any areas of concern.
Does composite bonding damage your teeth?+
It is important to remember that due to its nature, it does have a limited lifespan, so regular maintenance care is necessary. It’s also important to visit a competent dentist for the application process, as procedural factors such as technique and skill significantly impact composite bonding success. Proper selection of a reputable practitioner can help ensure long-lasting results while keeping your teeth in good condition over time.
Is composite bonding better than veneers?+
Composite bonding is an increasingly popular choice for cosmetic dentistry, due to its cost-effectiveness and quick turnaround time — performed directly in the dentist’s office, a great choice when time or budget are of utmost importance. Veneers may offer a longer-term solution for those hoping for a more permanent aesthetic enhancement, but composite bonding can be just as effective and provide satisfying results. Ultimately, the decision should be made in conversation between patient and dental provider, considering factors such as price range and desired outcome.
